Making Every Day Sacred
Journal Entries, March/April 1995:
Have you ever actually seen a butterfly emerging from its cocoon? I once watched a real-time film of the event; it seemed to take forever. It was very sobering to watch what the creature went through to extricate itself, and difficult to keep from reaching out to help it get free.
Although I already knew how butterflies “hatched,” I never really considered the monumental effort and the scope of the changes that caterpillars go through in the normal course of their development. They change into completely different
life forms while in their cocoons!
Changes are a natural part of our development too, and sometimes those changes can be
scary and messy, but the final outcome is usually worth it—in lessons learned, if nothing else.
I think the caterpillar’s metamorphosis can be analogous to the major changes in our own lives.
As we prepare for our new venture, whether it’s to move away to college, or get married, or retire,
we feel great anticipation for the new opportunities that await us. There’s the initial excitement of making the decision and planning for the future—a euphoria that comes from exploring the unknown.
